Generally speaking an anti-virus in place should detect computer virus infections of almost every kind. Unfortunately it is not that simple…Even with an up to date anti-virus in place Windows system will get infected. Of course it is always better to have an Anti-virus than not have one at all.

When deploying Anti-virus programs, be aware that problems may arise due to your systems configuration. Your computer may be already infected when deploying protection tools and certain bugs may react in an unexpected behavior which may cause your computer to become useless during an Anti-virus deployment.

Be courteous and sincere with your computer technician, provide details of the symptoms you have been observing or experiencing with the computer.
Be prepared to leave your computer at the shop for a couple of days (of course not months)
